My SDF Story with Reshim Haq

Where do you work and what is your role?

I am a Learning and Development Consultant at the University of Cambridge.

When did you join the SDF?

I joined SDF in September 2021 shortly after joining the University.

Why did you want to join the SDF?

My colleague recommended I join the SDF to gain a better understanding of the Higher Education sector staff development as I came from the Further Education sector.

What’s the best thing about the SDF?

I love how knowledge and skills are shared through the SDF with such dedication and genuine interest to help and support others.

What are you working on at the moment?

A course on equipping managers in supporting performance and development throughout the employment timeline.

Supporting my colleague on developing a managers’ handbook.

Tell us about an event that altered the course of your life/and career

I was made redundant as an IT Trainer after 10 years due to funding cuts to Adult Education, this led me to discover a career in Learning and Development within Human Resources.

The person who has influenced you the most is

As a Muslim, I strive to practice my faith, Islam, based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). He is the person I admire most and try my best to emulate.

Work life balance – what leisure activity do you enjoy the most?

Travelling and discovering new places and learning from these experiences. Travelling reminds me how life is a journey we are on and how nothing is permanent. We are in a constant state of motion. It helps me stay in perspective.

Something about you people would find surprising

When I tell them my age, they always think I am younger.

What’s your favourite/least favourite food?

I love all types of food, with a soft spot for chocolates, not a great one for being diabetic.
