My SDF Story with Hayley Osborne

Where do you work and what is your role?

I work at the University of Cambridge, as a Learning and Development Consultant.

When did you join the SDF?

I joined the SDF when I joined the Learning and Development Team last September.

Why did you want to join the SDF?

SDF was highly recommended by colleagues as a source of support, opportunity and knowledge.

What’s the best thing about the SDF?

Since joining I’ve realised the SDF has a fantastic community feel and someone will always respond to requests. I’ve been lucky enough to connect with colleagues nationwide thanks to SDF.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently working on the development of Professional Services Career Development Programme for Grades 3 to 6- something that | am really passionate about. I am also collaborating with a colleague on producing a Manager’s Handbook targeted at those with professional responsibility for the work, behaviour and development of others. It is intended to provide advice on best practice and signpost further documentation or support available.

What does a typical day look like?

Personally- probably a little chaotic! I have a 4 year old that has an aversion to school. Once he has been persuaded through the school door I head to the office three days a week, where I will either be working on projects, delivering training, supporting the Leaders and Managers Community of Practice or attending related meetings. The two days that I work from home tend to be used for catching up on correspondence and completing work towards my Coaching Apprenticeship. There really is never a dull moment!

Tell us about an event that altered the course of your life/and career

I worked in retail for (probably a few too) many years, towards the end of my stint I was doing quite a lot of Performance Management nationally. I arrived at a store to conduct a Disciplinary hearing, where I heard a member of staff say to another “Who’s she here to sack today?” When I left the store I vowed that would be the last Disciplinary meeting I would ever do, which, thankfully, it was!

The person who has influenced you the most is

My Dad, in two very different ways.  He is/was an Academic, and was keen to encourage his children academically. I was very clear from a young age that I wanted to push barriers and show how I could be successful in anything other than academia (youngest of three, following two very academically gifted older siblings), hence the lengthy Retail career.  He also said to me once when I asked for advice (something I rarely do with him), “You’re a leader not a follower, do what you believe is right.” I’ve very much adopted this as my life philosophy since.

Work life balance – what leisure activity do you enjoy the most?

I love family time, Disney and holidays- if I can combine all three, even better! We went on a VERY delayed trip of a lifetime to Florida last October, making memories and it was incredible! My son still talks about it now… for his recent school photo, when he was asked to ‘Smile’, he responded with “Mickey Mouse Cheese!”

Something about you people would find surprising

My hobby is DIY- I love learning new skills. Plastering is next on the list. I would love to be able to have a renovation project in the future.

What’s your greatest fear?

Rats – I am PETRIFIED.

What would improve the quality of your life?

Having a live in housekeeper! I am very picky about cleanliness, so this would be the dream, freeing up some time in a very busy schedule.

What’s coming next for you?

I am off to Cyprus soon, for some much-needed R&R and then after Christmas I will be launching the Career Development Programme which is super exciting! Next year I will also (hopefully) complete my Coaching Apprenticeship and start working on developing an internal coaching pool – lots to look forward to in 2025.
