Unleashing Your Creative and  Innovative Self

Building on the success of the ‘North-West Staff Developers Retreat into Innovation’ event which was held in January we would like to invite you to a one day workshop that will give you an opportunity to work with likeminded colleagues to explore the concepts and techniques relating to creative thinking and approaches to innovation.

You will get the chance to use some of the suggested tools and techniques to explore and create a new resource that can be used in your own institutions to support the development of others.  You will also get practical resources you can take away with you to support the development of others.

Indicative Content:  

  • How enhancing innovative capability can support the evolving role of the staff developer
  • Use of creative thinking techniques to explore new ways of working to broaden the scope of the staff development function
  • Practical experimentation in a team to use the methods learned to develop a people development related innovation

Learning Outcomes:

The workshop will equip attendees with:

  • An understanding of the role of innovation in desiging learning and development activities
  • An awareness of the importance of structured thought processes to enhance creativity
  • An appreciation of the relationship between creative thinking and innovation
  • An understanding of and practical experimentation with a range of creative thinking techniques to design a new development related innovation


Tracy Ellis:  An experienced staff developer working in LEPDU (Learning Enhancement and Professional Development Unit) and part time lecturer at the University of Bolton for the last 6 years.  She currently lectures on the MBA Leadership and Management Module and BA Education Mentoring in Education Module.  Prior to her current appointment she was a part time lecturer at Salford University for 12 years, teaching subject areas including business studies, people management, work psychology, communications and information technology.  Tracy also has expertise in design, delivery and evaluation of bespoke people development solutions in government departments, large private sector organisations and higher education.

Denise Fieldhouse: A staff development advisor at the University of Manchester. She has an interest in coaching and mentoring and is currently studying an ILM level 7 executive coaching and Nlp diploma, she also manages the University wide staff mentoring scheme. Although her work brings her into contact with colleagues from all areas of the University she is the main contact for the Medical and Human Sciences Faculty, where she is involved with helping identify development needs and appropriate interventions. Denise uses psychometrics regularly in her work and has a particular interest in transactional analysis.
