MPDG – October 2011 Meeting with John Lewis
The last MPDG meeting was held at Glasgow Caledonian University on 24 October where we welcomed Linda Rodger, Personnel Manager at John Lewis, who spoke after the meeting on ‘How do we engage employees during times of change’. Colleagues were invited to stay for the talk, and to bring along a colleague from their own institution.
The talk focused on the tools and techniques that John Lewis use to involve staff in influencing and decision making, which includes employee engagement surveys and team ‘huddles’. Linda also described how the company encourages staff to take responsibility and use their initiative, whilst outlining the organisation’s leadership behaviours and values, rewards and incentives.
Employee engagement goes beyond motivation and simple job satisfaction. It can be seen as a combination of commitment to the organisation and its values and a willingness to help colleagues.
The next MPDG meeting is scheduled for Thursday 1 March 2012 and we will be sharing details of the event soon.
